About me

As a working-class person, I have more than 25 years of experience in Office Administration and just because I was always willing to help out in other departments, I gained an extra array of knowledge and expertise.

But I am not going to bore you with each and every skill I've developed, so I am going to stick to my blog - Tin Lizzie Food.

Why "Tin Lizzie Food"? Well, besides staying in an apartment in Port Elizabeth in South Africa and being perfectly well adapted to a modern world and modern living, I am absolutely crazy about the idea of homesteading.

So much to say about modern living anyway if your whole world comes crashing down on you when you lose your job. You see, if you lose your job in South Africa (especially if you are over 45), you can almost be guaranteed that you will not be able to find a job again.

I know, in countries like the USA, they have hundreds of open positions but do not have the workers. Here in South Africa, it is the total opposite. The unemployment rate is a staggering 27% of the country's population (growing daily) but no vacancies to fill.

But what has all the statistics to do with Tin Lizzie Food?

Did you know that on average the salaries in South Africa are very low? The reason to be because there are no jobs and should you do land one, you are willing to accept any income to survive, which also means that people are unable to save. When it so happens that they lose this income they have little to no savings to pull them through until they (miraculously) find another job.

Finally, it brings me to Why Tin Lizzie Food

On the TLF (Tin Lizzie Food) the main page, you will learn that even Henry Ford found the taste of weed - wild edible plants - fascinating and tasty.

Watching all these pesky green shoots in my small courtyard garden, I started to do some internet research. Besides trying to fill the hungry pang in your tummy, weeds are also very healthy!

I was really in such a bad mental state a few months ago that I started to put my most precious things together that will fit into a backpack. I was só depressed and thought the only place for me would be the local squatter camp. Luckily it didn't turn out this way!

Thanks to some internet research I managed to earn a welcoming and continuous growing monthly income stream to at least have enough to eat 3 times per day and still keep the roof over my head.

The best part is that I did it all by making use of free media - nowhere I paid sign-up fees or purchased anything.

So what are my expenses then?
1) Monthly rental for my apartment
2) Internet
3) Electricity
4) And the most important: food

Of course, there would be clothes from time to time as well, but I try to mend my own clothes or, where possible, make clothes for myself or other necessities with what I have at hand.

I am very fortunate to stay about 3 to 4 blocks away from retail stores, chemists and banks. Due to my dire financial constraints a couple of months ago, I had to sell my car, cut my permanent internet cable, and scale down on luxuries.

I learned a lot and it was so rewarding to know that, whatever life may bring on your path, there is always a way out. Through hope, prayer, and faith I was able to stand up again, looking forward to the day ahead.
