Homesteading

Firstly, let us look at the meaning of Sustainability and Homesteading:

Sustainability - the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level; avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.

Homesteading - a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by growing your own produce, home preservation of food, repairing of garments and other crafts such as knitting blankets for household use.

Living in an apartment in the city is a huge challenge when it comes to sustainability and homesteading... Challenge excepted!

With the current economy and unemployment rate in South Africa, we need to improvise without neglecting ourselves.

I was working at a book and antique shop in Port Elizabeth and suddenly the owner of the shop got an offer on the building at a price he could not refuse - within 3 months the stock was sold out and the shop closed its doors. I was literary sitting with my hands in my hair. What am I going to do to get an income?

Luckily for me I have a bit of IT and debtor background and am able to assist people remotely online doing website support, issuing and emailing invoices and allocating payments, which basically means that I'm a Virtual Assistant.

Now, more than 18 months along the line I still do not have a new job, but at least I still do have my virtual clients.

Because of the crunching times, I would like you to join me on my journey to find ways to, not only save money but to be self-sufficient and grow produce on a small scale.

FYI- I have already been practicing homesteading skills for many years, and I wasn't even aware of it!

Be knowledgeable, be prepared, be encouraged.
